　　What are the responsibilities and limits of the media for reporting the truth of social crimes? This question arouses a big controversy in society. Some people suggest reports of crime details should be forbidden. Personally, I fundamentally agree with this assertion, and my reasons will be presented as below.

　　The primary reason of approving of this argument is that disclosing crimes details would place a whole society in risks. Surely, when reporting crime details, there are knowledge and skills necessary for committing crimes. In other words, by watching such reports, these would-be criminals, especially the young ones, can be taught how to plan and carry out illegal activities. For example, if the details about cyber crimes are publicized, then the young audience will know the technology of hacking, as well as the flaws of fire walls of computers. As a result, many of them would breed an idea of imitating this process of offence in a real world by themselves, and a higher rate of such crimes would be expected in the future.

　　Besides, to some extent, reporting crime details is improper, because it contains some sensitive private information. For example, in cases of rape, names and pictures of female victims must not be published in newspaper or TV news cycle. Otherwise, the basic rights of human privacy would be challenged and disrespected ruthlessly, and these victims would be hurt again by the media.

　　Lastly, I have to concede that detail reporting is reasonable on certain level. For one thing, the revealing of crime details are good lessons which provide useful anti-crime knowledge and experience to the public. For example, after watching and understanding the whole process of how an offender commits a crime, the viewers can realize by what ways and strategies they can defend themselves well, or prevent these unwanted situations.

　　In the first place,given the mercenary motives behind most detailed crime coverage,it is advisable for us to discredit and discourage this practice.Today,most news outlets have their own crime reporters covering the police beat.Yet the principal purpose of such assignment is,in most instances,not to uphold the criminal justice system or to alarm the citizenry over some very real criminal threats,but to jack up newspaper circulations or television ratings. Consequently, much detailed crime coverage is biased, magnified, misrepresented,deliberately titillating or fraudulent.It only serves to terrorise communities and leave a multitude of law-abiding citizens constantly apprehensive, if not paranoid,about crime.

　　In the second place,detailed reports of crimes by the press afford the potential criminals very instructive learning materials,which are hard to obtain otherwise. Recounting premeditated crimes in graphic detail in the public domain helps those who are in the process of planning some criminal act perfect their schemes.Drawing on the well-documented crime stories in the media,would-be criminals learn how to avoid the pitfalls in their crime,thereby making themselves harder to identify and track down after the crime is actually carried out.And this in turn,may aggravate the already soaring crime rate.

　　Thirdly,detailed reports of heinous crimes may permanently traumatise the victims of the reported crimes.Without the victims’ consent,glaringly vivid and graphic accounts of flagitious crimes may constitute recurring nightmares to the individuals who have been victimised by these crimes.And given the pressure to “scoop” their rivals,to expedite things news outlets rarely consult the victims before they depict lurid details of horrific crimes to the public,in an attempt to satisfy the base curiosity of some crime-obssessed readers and viewers.

　　In sum,detailed crime coverage in the media is,more often than not,sensationalised so as to boost their market penetration.Even when some crime reporters wish to play the role of an objective chronicler, the divulged details can serve to facilitate future crimes and force crime victims to relive the horrible moments they experienced during the crime.And I am convinced if detailed crime coverage goes unchecked,it will continue to exert baneful influence on individuals,communities and societies.

　　In contemporary society, we are surrounded by varieties of media like Internet, newspaper and TV program, which are current and informative, connecting us to the worldwide area. In the meanwhile, the medias also spark much debate because of negative influences. For instance, the news about criminal acts which are reported in graphic details, misleading people to commit crimes.

　　As I see it, the news outlets should pay more attention to the affairs themselves rather than the details of the crimes. To start with, the details of crimes make a misleading statement to the children and adolescents who are curious about the process of commit crimes, are likely to copy the criminal actions blindly. Moreover, the excessive violent and pornographic contents can also raise the adults' criminal rates. In the other words, detailed crime news can generate individuals' potential desire to commit a crime, thus induce many social problems. Last but not least, the detailed report of a crime does not show enough respects to the victims and their family.

　　Even so, the reports with criminal details maybe bring a well-looking audience rating, because of the individuals' curiosity. However, the press should play a key role as the justicial direction of public opinion. Regarding of responsibility, the code of ethics is the basis of the whole press, including journalism and electronic media.

　　Overall, i think the media have obligation to show a right direction for the public. It should report news objective and balance, rather than highlight the details of the crime.

　　Nowadays, detailed reports of crimes in media have aroused public concern largely. Large amount of people suggest that detailing crimes should be banned in consideration of its negative social influence. However I hold an opposite opinion towards them. And I will explain it as below.

　　It has been widely acknowledged that detailed reports of crimes would give people who tend to commit crimes cheap lessons in such an easy way. But media reports are never the only choice for a criminal to design his plans. As there is a will, there are ways to get information, for example by novels and internet. In another words, banning of detailed reports of crimes cannot ban criminals from collecting information. Meanwhile, bringing out those details helps common people focus on criminal information much in daily life, thus it makes media the most common way to get some education, for example not to hang out late alone.

　　Besides, there is a worry about hurting victims psychologically which is so not right to me. It is true that it can be really painful to face the miserable experiences, but a superficial calm by evading the truth is never a good therapy. A real relieve should be real peace in heart which requires courage and strength. Dare to tell the truth, overcome the fear and help others. This is the right thing to do.

　　Also, some people think that there will be unnecessary exaggerations about those details, in that media people want to boost sale. Hence the trueness is dubious. It may be true that the press will describe a common room as a scary place, but there is no such exaggeration as making a rob into a murder. This is a lie instead of a mere exaggeration. My point is that moderate exaggerations hurt nobody. The ones that twist truth are mistakes, which are always condemned in media industry and should not appear much.

　　In conclusion, I strongly support that media should report details of crimes. Those reports only have a limited negative social influence however the benefit for arousing public self-protection awareness outweighs much.
