　　Nowadays, there is an argument that reading mass media is a waste of time, because they have nothing to do with daily life. In my view, this assertion is ridiculous, because it fails to find out practical values of mass media in our lives. My reasons will be explored as below.

　　Firstly, the assertion of “no connection between news and people’s lives” is problematic, because it is opposite to the truth. Today, the majority of newspapers and TV channels are regional media, and all they reflect and respond are closely related to day-to-day life among people. They typical example is a kind of newspaper named City daily, which features focusing on every detail of a certain urban area, such as the implementation of new social rules, the rebuilding of transportation infrastructures, the discount time of malls, the schedule of exhibitions in museums and theatres, and even the price fluctuation of local food market. By reading the news happening around, urbanites can gain useful suggestions and instructions for making proper decisions about their outdoor travelling, shopping, and leisure activities every day. Moreover, forecasts and social-crime reports from these media play a key role as a reminder, which keeps audiences from the uncertainty and dangers. What is more, common knowledge and tips of life presented in newspaper, from cooking to gardening, from children caring to money planning, teach readers with practical experience and skills, which helps to keep their lives in good trim.

　　Another problem of this assertion is that it underestimates the contributions these media make to the mental health of the public. Generally speaking, in an age full of fierce competition and stress, reading newspaper is an ideal way by which the audience can relax their minds, no matter whether the contents in newspaper are useful or not. For example, by taking a glance at the words on newspaper that has no practicality at all, such as stories of historic events and people, tidbits about movie and sports stars, as well as introductions of academic knowledge about science and arts, readers can lift themselves up from the pressure, worries and anxiety. Therefore, mass media well serves a positive purpose of entertainment which improves emotional stability and well-being of the public.

　　Overall, I believe this assertion of denying the importance of mass media makes no sense. The truth is, newspaper and TV programs have been proven greatly meaningful and valuable in the public’s convenience, safety and entertainment.

In this sense, some believe reading news on newspapers or watching news programs on TV is a waste of time. However, in my opinion, being informed of the latest events can still bring great benefits to people.

　　Obtaining the news information is instructive to people’s life. Frequently reading the news reports, no matter in newspapers or on TV programs, citizens can be enabled to understand clearer the policies of the country, and thus can behave accordingly, without worrying to be lagged behind. Also, knowing what is happening around or over the world, people can be motivated to grasp more chances to realize their dreams.

　　Reading news helps people to enjoy better communication with the others. Always being connected with the news, people can be broadened in their horizons and thus are enabled to have more topics to share with their friends or relatives. Moreover, when something urgent such as disasters or other forms of tragedies happen, people may not only offer their help to show humanity, but also gain some experience in tackling the problems.

In this case, people are already besieged by too much information, making the reading of news in newspapers and TV programs seemingly pointless. However, this cannot deprive people of their rights to enjoy the time with their family members and this does not mean they can select out the right information. Therefore, getting news that is selected for them from newspapers or TV programs can still be of great value to the public.

　　To sum up, newspapers and TV news programs are still significant in delivering news reports. As for how to take advantages of them, it depends on individual’s judgment, rather than just an assertion of a waste of time

　　It is an indisputable fact that news is penetrating into our daily lives in such an overwhelming matter that nobody can resist reading it. This cannot be truer that it is today when information explosion has ended the era of regional isolation. However, an increasing number of people begin questioning the usefulness of the news to our lives. They held that reading new is merely a waste of time since most new hardly bare any direct relationships with our daily lives. As far as i am concerned, news plays an pivotal role in our lives and i would further illustrate my idea from the following perspectives.

　　On the macro level, reading news provide a chance for the public to supervised the governmental behavior, hence enhancing the democracy and civilization in a country in the long run. One of the most important character of a democratic society is the transparency of the government activities, and news is one of the most indispensable way to achieve a transparent government. The public, well-informed of the government information, give their suggestions and ideas to the administrative organs. Consequently, our society would become indefinitely a more democratic and civilized place to live in.

　　On the micros level, news would enrich facilitate our lives. On one hand, exchanging opinions of the latest news is an important way to interact with friends and relatives. Surely nobody want to be the silent one when others are neatly discussing the news. In addition, the news on TV and newspaper would inform us the necessary information. For instance, the report about the online transection fraud would remind us to be more careful with e-commerce. The report of the newly promulgated legal policy would help us to avoiding breaking the law. Therefore, news is not only beneficial to our life, but also a necessity in the modern society.

　　To sum up, the news is closely connecters to us in various ways. It would be an ignorant and naive view to regard news as useless. After all, news has already become an inescapable part of our live. The best way to cope with the information explosion is to live with it, not to shield ourselves form it.
