Friends are indispensable parts of our lives. Some people are fond of making new acquaintances, since it can bring some fresh and exciting experiences, while others prefer to maintain their old relationships. As far as I’m concerned, I would totally agree with the statement that it is more important to maintain a small number of friends for long time. My reasons will be listed below.

To start with, old friends are those who have many memorable experiences with you, and this relationship has to stand the test of time. Not two people are perfect match, and friends are no exception. Therefore, we may have problems and conflicts between our friendships; however, a compromising action may mean a lot. Take my friend Anna as example, we were roommates in college, and we all like reading very much. And the same interest in reading brought us together. However, she was also fond of rock music which may make me headache. This brought conflict between us, and we quarreled with each other. At the same time, we had a serious talk and both considered what our friendship really meant, and our relationship is in such a danger. However, she did something that surprised me a lot. She finally made peace with rock music and we went back as close friends again. Although there are conflicts between us, we learn to manage them and have a long-lasting relationship.

Moreover, long-lasting friends are those who can help you immediately without hesitation when you are in troubles. Since we have shared so much happiness and sorrows together, a true friend really have a deep understanding for you. Once I was in a hurry to paying rents and I have no cash in my card, so I asked for my old friends for help. After she listened to my situation, she lent me money immediately without hesitation. However, I may not have enough confidence to talk to my new friends since I do not want her to fully understand my situation right now. She may lend me money but I am a little worried that she may also laugh at me. So it would be a real convenience to talk with old friends.

Last but not least, I do not deny that making new friends can give us a lot of freshness and excitement. However, it is old friends who can give us real help and make us have true happiness. And it really takes time to build a sincere bond with new friends.

To sum up, keeping old friends close needs time and efforts, but it matters more because it pays off in ways new friends cannot possibly achieve.
