The reading and the listening both are taking about what might have happened to a ship named Mary. The reading puts forward three possibilities, which, however, are refuted by the listening with the following arguments.
Firstly, in the reading, it is said that Mary may have been attacked by pirates. However, the listening disagrees with it by illustrating that no stuff was found to be lost. If the ship had been attacked by the pirates, Mary could not seem to be intact.
Turning to the second hypothesis that the some flammable item carried by the ship is the possible cause of destroying it, for empty barrels are detected on it. The listening, on the other hand, argues that if any flammable item had been the real cause of this disaster, then unpleasant smell would be sent out, which would last for a long time. However, the smell is proven by no evidence, thus leading the hypothesis of flammable item unconvincing.
Lastly, regarding the possibility that the ship was flooded raised by the reading which cited the evidence that the bottom of the ship was filled with water to a depth of about a meter, the listening contradicts it by asserting that even if the ship leaked, this kind of ship was proven to be capable of sail for days. Besides, the captain was a quite experienced one, thus leading the last argument of reading unreasonable again.
