题目:
Ageism in employment is illegal in some countries. What positive and negative influences does the law bring?
In some countries, it is illegal for companies to reject job applicant for their age, is this a positive or negative development?
Nowadays, governments in many countries take a policy that forbids companies to refuse the job applications of aged group. Personally, I think this policy is positive for both the society and the old people themselves, and my reasons would be explored as below.
The first reason of approving of this policy is that the rejection of companies based on the age of job applicants obviously violates the right of citizens. In fact, jobs which are defined as social resources should be fairly open to all individuals, regardless of their ages. If the age becomes an excuse that keeps people from participating in work, people who are competent in working but not involved in so-called legal age extent of employment will certainly feel discriminated, anger and depreciated, thus leading to anti-social conflicts and rebellions.
Secondly, it is also unwise for companies to refuse aged applicants, because this group has certain incomparable advantages over the youth. For example, old people in retirement are well-experienced in solving work-related problems, professionally proficient in working skills, as well as having well-established interpersonal network. In other words, all of these abilities and resources of old people can keep the management of a company on a right track.
Admittedly, hiring too many old employees might be risky for companies, mainly because of the uncertainty of their health. For example, people aged over 60 are unsuitable for the firstline positions, for the reason that the limited energy and endurance would inhibit their work efficiency. In addition, under the stress in working, there is a high possibility for them to be troubled in unexpected diseases like heart attack, which then would trap an entire work environment into disorder.
In conclusion, the advantages of allowing the elders to join in company jobs overweigh the disadvantage. Although their health problems might worry the work team, their great contributions to the company should never be underestimated. Otherwise, social conflicts incurred by them would take place.
Currently, the discrimination in work place based on individuals’ age is legally banned in some nations, which arouses wide public concern in the society. Some suggest that it is beneficial, while others argue it would pose more defects. Before presenting my perception, I prefer to go through the pros and cons over this issue completely.
On the one hand, it intensively protects senior people’s working right. Accessing to work, regardless the gender and age, is the basic human right in modern society. For the old who cannot maintain a satisfying life after retirement or fail to meet the basic survival if they are not covered by the social security system, reentering the work place seems to be imperative. According to a recent investigation, 57% old citizens in Tokyo in 2009 continue working after reaching 60, and some even work till 75. However, if they are excluded from being hired again, they will hardly survive, let alone mentioning human right. Additionally, allowing the senior to work also promises the sustainable development to some extent. The old who accumulated abundant working experience could considerably instruct the young generation or even avoid economic loss for the company, since the young are not mature enough to tackle complicated situation.
On the other hand, permitting the old to approach work might somehow deteriorate the fierce employment competition. Specifically, when countless newly graduated college students leave the campus, they have to compete not only with their contemporary peers but also the experienced old, which imposes a doubled pressure for the young employees. What’s more, even though the senior own enormous practical experience, they inevitably fail to follow the pace of technology advancement. Therefore, the integrative creativity of the company and the society would comparatively lag off.
In conclusion, whether the government advocates aborting the ageism in work place depends on the country’s real status. If the country does not suffer from intense employment contest, it should be encouraged, for the senior workers will bring tremendous merits to the society as a whole.
