For more than decades, the issue of space exploration has divided the public and even today it still sparks bitter controversy among citizens as well as the professionals. There are some people who hold the position that government should invest more in protecting environment rather than in exploring outer space, which I cannot agree with more.

There remain several reasons which can back the opinion mentioned above, among which the first major one is that the achievements are not equal with what government and people have done. Due to the hardships in the outer space, the instruments and equipment are required a higher level. As a result, a multitude of money has been put into this field. However, so far none of spin-offs from space projects can have the equivalent impact on society and people’s life. In other words, to some extent, these kinds of programs is wasting precious resources.

Apart from what is listed above, another vital factor is that there exist a great many urgent issues, which are in great need of attention, including environmental protection， improving the living standard of the poor and so forth. These issues are closely relevant to people’ daily life and have the greater importance than the exploration in the outer space, which deserve more attention and investment from the public as well as the local authority.

Nevertheless, not all citizens agree with the argument above. They, on the other hand, contend that the outer space is worth being explored in that it has something to do with human’s future life, which can exert a profound impact on the existence of human. It is a common phenomenon that Earth, the planet where people are living now, may not accommodate all of people, provided that the population is soaring at such a rapid speed. Besides, the resources, including clean drinking water and qualified air, are not sufficient. In order to free people from this dilemma, scientists have to explore other planets for these limited but vital resources.

From the discussion above, these two sides both have reasonable foundations, but I still firmly support the point that the exploration of outer space is not so urgent as the environment and issues like that.
