Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: Educating children is a more difficult task now because children spend too much time on cell phones, online games and social networking websites.

Living in such an information-explosion era, people can acquire knowledge from different approaches, such as listening to lectures, watching TV, as well as surfing the Internet. Educators and parents always complain that their children who are attracted by these new things and hard to focus on their study. In my opinion, although these new things are so tempting, there is not a necessary correlation between these new devices and good education.

First of all, besides learning from textbook, keeping balance between study and playing is also an essential part of education. If everything children do must have some educational or academic relevance, then they will soon get tired of studying altogether, which is the last thing teachers and parents would want. Spending time on cell phones, online games and social networking websites can be linked to the breathing of whales: they need to emerge for a breath after short intervals. Otherwise, they would suffocate. Likewise, students need a way to relax and refresh themselves for better academic performance in the study.

What's more, the new things bring positive influence to education. Children should cultivate the ability of self-learning rather than being spoon-fed. Educating means offering thoughts and opening minds, and it should enlighten children on thinking, not just following their parents or teachers’ instructions. In a sense, using the cell phone, playing online games or surfing social networking website can enlarge the scope of knowledge with vivid pictures. Children can find new friends who share the same interest with them. These new devices actually provide children a communicating platform to express their own ideas, to exchange their inspirations, and to solve the problem by themselves.

Although the distractions nowadays are much more than before, it must admit that the distractions are never disappeared no matter in the past or in the future. In the past, children were also indulged in many other things, such as reading fiction, playing cards and the like. So it does not mean that educating children is a more difficult task now. It is the parents and educators’ responsibility to teach children how to overcome these distractions and focus on their study. New attractive distractions are not the reasonable excuse for educator.

Given everything we have been talking about, I still believe that cell phone and Internet are not the obstruction of educating children. These two aims do not always conflict, but they are mutually complementary at times. Parents and teachers are necessary to exhort their children keeping balance between studying and playing, especially when they are addicting in them.
